Survey Says: Half Of UK Men Would Give Up Sex For 50-Inch Plasma TV
A British electronics retailer asked 2,000 men and women what they'd give up in exchange for a 50" plasma TV, and according to them, "47 percent of men would give up sex for half a year." Among women, the number drops to about a third who are wiling to forgo sex. We're not going to pretend for a second that this study is in any way scientific, but still—six months? Seriously?
Proving how non-addictive tobacco is, only 25% of people were willing to give up cigarettes for a TV, and about the same number were willing to give up chocolate.
Maybe the men who answered six months were counting on loopholes—there's a lot of non-"sex" you can enjoy with a 50" plasma TV and some hi-def porn.

Geez... Hey I LOVE good sex, but presented with a good enough deal to abstain for a relatively short period of time (6 months isn't that long if you're busy)? I'd consider it.
I mean hell, you give up 6 months of sex, but you have a XX" 1080p Plasma TV for how many years? And save $XXXX? Not really that bad a deal. Esp. if I can still flog the dolphin, hehe.
*the deal would have to be a 65" 1080p set to get the gears a-turnin', as I already have a 50" 720p set and really plasma's not enough to sell me on 6 months of abstinence. Hence XX" above....
Plus people, you have to consider who these guys are F-in' in the first place. 6 months of no sex might be a vacation for them, lol! Now what would be interesting is to change the question a little. Like, say,
"Would you rather take a XX" Plasma TV for Free OR have sex with (insert your favorite female/male sex symbol here) for 6 months?" Of course you have to ask this question in private.... :-)
@jeffbone: How old and married does one have to be before the "not much sex" clause kicks in? I just want to plan ahead ...
If you're a single male, and had the kind of luck I did, picking girls up... Yeah, no problem! Free TV!
Married, even as old and decrepit as I am, NO WAY! SIX MONTHS? Yeah, I guess sleeping pills would maybe be ok, but there is NO male sleep aid like good sex. And instead of a massive hangover, you feel GOOOD the next day...
@magic8ball: It's not so much a function of "age" as it is of "Do you have kids?" and "If so, how many?" Sadly, I know from personal experience.
I think the ages and marital status are important in surveys like this. For people who can have sex any time they want (and have been having it for years), not doing so for 6 months isn't such a big deal in exchange for an expensive item.
The people who make the biggest deal about not having sex are those who haven't been having it regularly and have a hunger that isn't sated. Men actually are less interested in sex as they grow older (whereas women tend to be more interested because of hormonal changes and fewer concerns about pregnancy) so a lot of older men would not struggle with half a year of abstinence, especially if they've had a partner for awhile.
The results of this survey reflect real world values rather than the manufactured ones which say sex is this huge deal to everyone and that they have to obsess over it all the time and have it all the time. Realistically speaking, is giving up sex for 6 months a whole lot harder than giving up chocolate or beer or any other source of pleasure?
I would think that many of those surveyed were downtrodden married men* who already aren't getting it like a college kid, and watching whatever style football you like on a big free HDTV and having one off the wrist instead (which is probably less hassle for them anyway) is a pretty good trade-off...
* No stereotypes were harmed in the making of this comment.
@ShariC: I don't know about that. When I was single and in a drought, my attitude would probably have been "well, I'm not getting it anyway, why not?"
Sucks to be them (pun intended).
I got the 50" plasma (720p panasonic, black-friday 2006!, $1700 installed (2006 mind-you)) and the sex. And I'm a former Brit! (former might be the key difference).
Question is, would i give up 6 months sex for a 1080P? Nope. 720P looks pretty damn nice at 10 feet away (couch to TV distance); sure 1080P would be nice, but the sex is better.
@alk509: On related news, 47% of British men are having some shitty-ass sex...
Shitty, ass sex? If that's what they're getting, the joke is on the surveyor: I don't need a bribe to avoid that. I'd bribe you to keep it the hell away from me!
I completely understand the men who ARE having sex, but would still take the TV. I mean, without the deal, there's no way that I am getting a 50 inch TV in the foreseeable future. But if I took the deal, I'm pretty sure my fiance would still have sex with me 6 months from now!
So in a way, the real question was: "How confident are you that your relationship could withstand 6 months without sex?" In the UK, around half the marriages end in divorce, so the 47% result is about what you would expect.
