A Chocolate Recall For Valentine's Day

5756 views

Yeah that's how we celebrate here at Consumerist.

From the FDA:

See's Candies, Inc. of San Francisco, Calif., is recalling 16-ounce bags of See's Candies Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips because the product may contain undeclared traces of milk. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.

@Snarkysnake: Yes, that Mary See is quite the looker.

The only holiday chocolate I like:

This is the exact reason that I refuse to get my wife a Valentines Day present. Thanks, again, See's.

@MercuryPDX: Aahahaha, I love creme eggs!

CHOCOLATE RECALL
A candy maker leaves out allergens
CHOCOLATE RECALL
Screws those with lactose intolerance

user-pic

This is just stupid. We need to protect the people who may not realize that chocolate often contains milk, but we can let the rest of the population go to hell by letting poison crap from China.

user-pic

@MercuryPDX: Much love for the creme eggs (and caramel eggs)!

user-pic

@zouxou: Seriously, chocolate doesn't have milk? Most LI folks I know avoid chocolate like the plague.

user-pic

The Company is part of Berkshire Hathway, they have deep pockets for anyone that has a reaction.

user-pic

Wait doesnt chocolate have milk in it? So what exactly is the point of this recall?

user-pic

@theblackdog: I once ate 10 Cadbury creme eggs in a row. OMG I had a huge tummy ache

user-pic

Undeclared traces of milk? REAL milk, and not like cocoa butter or something? Mmmmm... send all those recalled bags to ME.

user-pic

i don't know...i always thought chocolate had milk. even my mom, who is LI, eats chocolate.

user-pic

Anyone who gets someone Semi-Sweet chocolate chips for valentines day is a dick.

user-pic

@UpsetPanda:

So far as I know, it depends on the brand and the recipe. A fair number of dark chocolates don't have any milk in them, for example (although some do).

user-pic

milk chocolate has milk. there are actually quite a few vegan chocolates out there, but you have to read the labels REAL carefully. try scharfenberger's 70% cocoa. mmmmmmmmmmm..............

user-pic

Vegan chocolate, now I have heard everything. I could neve be vegan I love my bloody steaks too much.

user-pic

Oh that is sad "undeclared" milk? Come on! LI people don't do chocolate. They go after poor little See's and roll right past dangerous crap from China!

user-pic

Technically only milk chocolate and white chocolate contain milk (of course technically white chocolate is not chocolate at all)

Dark chocolate and it's variants, bittersweet and semisweet, are not supposed to contain milk.

user-pic

Wallspray is right. Semi sweets are for breaking up.

user-pic

sucks to be them...they're on Modern Marvels right now :)

user-pic

Nothing here of interest. Come on, move on please.

user-pic

Just finished rolling chocolate ganache truffles for my baby. Mmmmmm!

user-pic

I'm sorry - but having to *declare* that chocolate might have traces of milk is like declaring there *might* be some oil on your engine block.

@wallspray: What if you bought those chocolate chips to make cookies for your sweetie? :-P

user-pic

@shadow735: Semisweet chocolate generally doesn't have milk, no. Milk chocolate does, hence the name "milk chocolate".

user-pic

If i had a critical dairy or nut allergy i would just assume all chocolate products have trace amounts of them unless specifically stated to the contrary.

user-pic

I discovered See's Candy at Christmas. They are goooood. The famous I Love Lucy scene where she and Ethel are on the candy assembly line was filmed at See's.

user-pic

@cccdude: I'm sorry, but you don't have a clue. It took me about thirty seconds to find out that dark chocolate (including semi-sweet) doesn't have milk in it.
