The poll machine is fixed and it’s time to vote on which companies will get to compete in Consumerist’s Third Annual Worst Company In America contest. This year, you nominated 121 different companies, a new record. The poll is inside (it may take a few seconds to load). You get one vote. The companies receiving the most votes will get seeded in a tournament-style bracket. Then the clash of the customer service midgets begins! Remember that as this contest goes on you can visit consumerist.com/tag/worst-company-in-america to keep track of all the proceedings.
(Special thanks to JoeConsumer for making this poll happen!)

I’m shocked at how hard it was to choose. They are all so awful.
If our definition of company is as tenuous as Fox News then I nominate the NFL which at least sells a product. Specifically the veterans committee. What those guys are doing to the old timers is way fucked.
One entry I’ve noticed is missing is Leegin Creative Leather products aka BRIGHTON. While many of those companies could care less about Joe consumer, I dont think most of them are filing suit to strip you of your consumer rights like these assholes. I cringe every time my wife wants to shop there.
Hey morons how about you keep your stupid bottled water, and I keep my rights under the law?
You can read about it here:

What! NO Circuit City!!!! and NO way to enter them as a write in. They’re much worse than Best Buy any day of the week. They must have achieved Hall of Shame status and thus have been eliminated to give another Company a chance to be “The Worst Company in America.”
Ditto for the RIAA!
Dish Network! Only 6 months and 17 days to start my rebate–and that only happened because this site posted the CEO’s email address! Unfortunately, I live in an area that is so rural it’s like 20 minutes to the nearest city by phone–and if I dee-six the Dish Network, I have to bow down to DirecTV. Hmmmm, it’s like asking what would you rather have….cancer or AIDS?
One word (in caps no less): TICKETBASTARD.
Blue Cross/Blue Shield as a symbol for the entire health insurance industry. Only reason they don’t get more here is Consumerist’s young demographic.
no FedEx?
I think you mean AIMCO Property Management, AMICO is a medical equipment manufacturer according to Google.
No UPS?!
Microsoft is the worst of the worst. Their product is faulty most of the time. Their software is unreliable. Their customer service is rude and unpleasant.
Just so y’all understand a bit better, Blue Cross & Blue Shield are licensed brands, not one single company. Depending on where you live, your BC&BS company may or may not be related to the BC&BS plan in the state next door. There is a Blue Cross & Blue Shield Association, that all the licensees belong to, but what one licensee does isn’t binding to any of the others.
Oh, and some BC&BS companies are profit/shareholder driven, and some are not-for-profit…
Where is the RIAA?
US Airways has THE worst customer service in the airline department.
@azgirl:
How dare a company try to make a profit?! EVIL! EVIL!
@LikeYourFace: No sometimes I have to work =) I missed the damn nomination part, I just figured someone would have.
I missed my chance to put one on the list : Schwan’s Frozen foods. Bad company to work for if you’re not wanting to stay married. I got out of that pit sometime ago. Long hours, bad equipment but great product. This business started off w/ good intentions but melted down to the two things that most businesses fall prey to – Greed & Money. Meanwhile the employees are treated like chumps. One thing that would help them on the path of better business practices is to introduce a GPS system in those Inca Gold colored, propane fueled death traps.
Apple is by FAR the most evil corporation in America
I am flabbergasted that GE is not even on your list. It could be because they have managed to keep their villainy and tyranny below the radar. GE is the most powerful non-oil company in the world. I believe they did not get there by being honest and by offering good products and services at fair prices. I believe they sell garbage for top dollar all while squeezing suppliers, wholesalers and employees. Instead of operating a win-win-win operation, where the shareholders, employees, and customers all gain, I believe they have win in mind for only one group. If Thomas Edison had been a decent person, he would be rolling over in his grave to see the state of this company.
Comcast, easily. A lucky few of you may not have felt their touch yet. Pray it stays that way.
I voted for DirecTV, but am disappointed that FTD wasn’t among the choices.
I voted for Microsoft. Vista is such crap and putting vista compatible on underpowered computers?
Why isn’t Congress on this list? After all, they’re a wholly owned subsidiary of corporate America.
GeekSquad should not be on its own line. Best Buy fully owns them now. The original GeekSquad in Minneapolis was a breakthrough service. Best Buy completely ruined a good thing and now are replacing techs with salespeople.
Best Buy/Future Shop/GeekSquad/Magnolia should all be the same entry.
So many to choose from… I can’t pick just one! Fox News, Countrywide, Comcast, AT&T, News Corp, DeBeers, Diebold, Best Buy, Clear Channel… So many deserving corporations…
Were this post to be on Kotaku, Microsoft would win(or lose, as you see fit) in a heartbeat.
Bank of America is definitely on my personal hit list! I’ve actually had to open the SAME damn savings account twice (because the first teller didn’t actually enter the data in during the hour and a half she was “serving” me.
They’ve sent me three check cards with the same card number in the last week (after canceling my current card for no reason…and without warning me that it would be voided–which I, of course, had to wait to learn in an embarrassing grocery store incident). And the checks I ordered came in three different boxes…all with different addresses and phone numbers printed on them…but not a single one had MY info on there!
And I still have not been able to submit my social security number despite the fact that I brought the card in for verification.
Not to mention that they charged me for my student checking account for two and a half years and then refused to credit me the money back when I figured out that it should have been free all along (I’m an international students so yeah…I had to learn the American way from Bank of America).
I could go on…but then again, time might be better spent switching banks. Oh yeah, apparently I have to go back to the branch where I FIRST opened the account 5 years ago to close it down! What?!
