Case Closed: Comcast Billing Gone Bonkers

After we posted SM’s battle with Comcast to stop fraudulently billing her for over a year, , Comcast took notice and asked to get in touch with SM. We played matchmaker and now Comcast reports that the problem is solved. The account is cleared and CMI has been notified to stop trying to collect on it. Inside is the letter they are sending to SM. Hooray, problem solved. Comcast’s billing system, however, remains a mess. Hopefully CMI won’t still try to collect, for CMI’s sake. Otherwise SM will now really have a very good basis for making quick and easy cash by suing them in small claims court for violations of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

    @hypnotik_jello: CMI won’t but the company they sell the debt to again will.

    Yep, CMI will sell the debt on and that company will continue to report it as a collection account on her credit report until she disputes the debt with the collection agency, the collection agency “validates” the debt by looking on their computer screen, then she sues them for improper validation and collects $3000.

    Then she’ll get to start the “save correspondence, dispute, sue for failing to follow dispute procedure” nonsense with the credit agencies.

    Sounds like fun, eh?

    As a former Comcast employee I can shed some light on this. Entry level CSRs (CAEs in Comcast-speak) could not update with CMI. All it takes is to get somebody in what we call “Support Services” to update with CMI and presto it was all taken care of. I think if somebody is sending a letter this will be taken care of.

    I had to go all the way to the CFO’s office to get a problem solved. (I solved it myself by canceling my service.)

    Comcast is the perfect example of how to run a monopoly. Grab the wires and screw the customers.

    I’m pretty sure that all her future interactions with Comcast will meet her expectations, assuming her expectations are anything as low as they should be for Comcast.
