Sony, you got a lot a splainin to do!
One thing I think is weird is that the question of “who is winning” is always stated in terms of unit sales, not profit. For instance for the last generation Sony is always proclaimed as “the winner” with Nintendo a distant third. However Nintendo made more profit that Sony and Microsoft’s game divisions combined. In my mind its not about how many units you ship, but how much money you make the owners of the company.
This generation the Wii is winning on both counts.
How can this be? Everybody knows that people the world over only want to play ultra complicated, 60+ hour epic sequels with a steep learning curve that makes it inaccessible to new players. On top of that, we all want to make a $400+ investment for the privilege.
Or at least that’s what the idiots at 1up.com said on the 1up podcast coverage of the 2006 Tokyo Game Show. According to them, the Wii was going to be DOA, Xbox live would be free, and the PS3 would be dominating by Christmas 2007.
