I had no idea this was going on. No wonder these have been on sale lately. 10 for $10! I bought a few and had some….and I’m still kicking. I followed the tips on the package and cooked it in an oven as directed. I highly recommend one….an oven that is.
This sounds just wrong. The bacteria cannot survive the temperatures used in baking a pizza. I think the investigators are barking up the wrong tree here… Just because there is a commonality, doesn’t mean that it is the cause.
this is, what, the 2nd or 3rd recall of a frozen food lately, do people not know how to follow directions or use an oven?
As I watched the video clip and heard of this recall for the first time I couldn’t help but stare at the empty plate beside me. The same plate where about ten Totino’s Pizza Rolls were just sitting.
Everything I love is either immoral, fattening, or contaminated with e. coli.
@SurrenderMonkey: No, people are stupid. Just plain stupid.
@goller321: You’ve never cooked a pizza and after getting to the couch you find that the center is still cool and say good enough?
@baltwade: Dude I love Totino’s Pizza Rolls. I know mine are always cooked to 160 because it is rare I don’t burn my tongue off and make a mess LOL
@SurrenderMonkey:
When it rains, it pours.
I don’t understand how people could have gotten sick from following the instructions. Maybe there is a new heat resistant E.coli strain?
Seems… odd.
I <3 Totino’s. When I’m really hammered, and cannot wait for the oven to heat up, I speed up the process by first nuking it in the microwave for 90 seconds, then cutting it in half and putting it (one half at a time) in the toaster oven on ‘toast’. By the time I’m finished woofing down the first half.. the second one’s ready.
It’s 3-minutes-from-frozen-to-delicious!
Although this hack may need some work if I need to kill the heebie-jeebies now.
@kublaconsumer: @goller321: a few lazy people don’t heat their food properly, I know this since people in a dorm sometimes rush and the center is still raw, or sometimes, they just heat it enough to thaw it and eat it cold. Yes thats gross, but when you you are short on time, your options are not always pretty
@baltwade: You’re in the clear! Pizza rolls aren’t included in the recall, just the 5-10 product codes listed.
I prefer to be poisoned by Papa Murphy’s take and bake. Please tell me the Geno’s Pizza rolls are okay! And thank god the Hot Pockets supply isn’t tainted.
Why do they always say “Throw it away?”
What if I want my money back? Its not like the recall was my fault and I didn’t actually pay any money for it! If I walk into a grocery store with a box of pizza, will they refund me?
I’m stumped. Really, really, stumped and I just took the ServSafe food safety class. Pepperoni is fully cooked before it reaches the pizza and cooking the pizza should bring the temp to well past 160 degrees.
Totino’s pizzas are the most disgusting form of food on the planet! Its literally a cardboard crust with tomato soup and chunks of hotdogs labeled, pepperoni pizza. Oh and that cheese has to be formed from left over refuse at a lard factory.
@homerjay: on MPR they did a segment, your supposed to contact the company and they send you a coupon for a new one when they redistribute so you’ll get another “pizza” minus the possibility of diarrhea and death.
And just exactly HOW am I supposed to get my meat thermometer into the middle of a pepperoni?
@Zgeg:
I’m trying really hard not to make an off-color joke about a small meat thermometer.
It’s literally made out of cardboard? Well, that should cut some calories and add some fiber to the nutritional content.
@RISwampyankee: Maybe the slicing equipment was contaminated? But yea, if you follow the baking instructions, it should be fine.
For those that prefer print instead of video, the Minneapolis paper goes a bit more in-depth:

It might prompt you for a password, though.
Why are so many people rushing to cook a Totino’s Pizza? It only takes 8 minutes people. Jeebus. Is your life really so important that you can’t spare an extra 5 minutes instead of 3 and a half-frozen pizza?
Anywho, Warfoxer, how can you not like Totino’s pizza? It’s awesome! It’s cheap and tasty. It’s #1 favorite frozen pizza in the US according to the box. So I think the US disagrees with you there. Overprocessed or not, it’s still tasty… and did I mention cheap?
When I was a teenager, I used to heat up these things in the microwave when I was really lazy. There were cold splotches. I cringe in disgust at the thought now.
This is one way this could have happened.
@night_sky: at 2:30am and most of the way in the bag, I cannot risk turning on my real oven, waiting for it to heat up (10+ mins), wait 8 more mins for the ‘za to cook, and then likely burn my mouth for all the trouble.
I’ll probably fall asleep while waiting and burn the house down. So yes, it is a matter of life and death. Because I sure don’t eat those things when I’m straight.
Kind of like a gypsy girl I once whirled about with many years ago in Budapest… she told me in her awesome broken accent, “I like you all the time, but I just love you when I’m drunk!”… that’s how it is w/ me and Totino’s. It’s a short, sweet life.
Dude I stocked up on these (10 for 8 bucks at Hyvee like a month ago). I am not worried because I fully cook my pizzas (tend to go a little long as I like them a little crispy). My guess is people nuked them to cook them, and they didn’t get totally hot.
Don’t be dumb people, fully cook your food!
@savvy999: lol, fair enough. I don’t preheat my oven and it always takes me 8 mins. Guess I just have a hot burnin’ oven.
She’s a MAN, baby!
I agree with some of the comments and the video. I’ve never had one with “cold splotches” in it when it’s made in the oven. They’re disgusting when you sit down and read the ingredients and the nutritional information, but it’s awesome stuff when you need to eat and you don’t mind larding out a lot. Cook it right, and you’ll be OK.
I remember when I was a teenager I heated up Jeno’s Pizza Rolls in the oven until they were just hot enough, but not too hot. I thought I was a genius. That night I got sick. Then I did the same thing a week or two later and put two and two together.
I mentioned it to my Mom and asked how food that was cooked before it was frozen could have anything wrong with it.
I remember her very well saying that contamination could come after the food was cooked and before it was packaged. A sick worker who didn’t wash his hands, or who sneezed on the product. A machine that just got worked on but not cleaned properly. A freezer malfunction in the delivery truck or at the store.
As I recall, that is the last time I ever got “stomach flu.” I treat all frozen food like it was raw hamburger meat – don’t touch anything else after I’ve handled it until I wash my hands and be sure to clean any surface it touched.
It pretty much put me off all un-cooked food, which is why I don’t eat deli meat or raw vegetables and only raw fruit whose peel has never been punctured or breeched (that I can tell) and it gets a good washing before I peel it.
Oh, and my coolest trick – when I bake cookies and cakes I used pasteurized egg beaters instead of eggs so I can lick the batter off the spoon and not worry about Salmonella!
Yeah, I’m kind of paranoid. But I never, ever get stomach flu. I guess it’s a good thing I like my pizza crust very crispy!

Best comment ever.
@homerjay: Yes, if you bring ina frozen pizza (or anything that you’re dissatisfied with) foodstores will give you a refund if you have a receipt. My cheapskate ex used to do this.
I know a manager at General Mills and he said that many companies were supplied pepperoni and other meats by Hormel and they were only the first to recall due to the company size/reputation. Something says there will be more recalls.
@warf0x0r: They ain’t the best frozen pizza out there. BUT they are quick and easy kid food. Kids don’t notice the difference. As a father of three I’ve become convinced that children have no taste buds, unless they feel like being finicky.
Like, all I want to eat right now after watching that is a cheese Totino’s pizza. What does that say about me? Nothing good I imagine.
This is another ridiculous recall. These companies are so afraid of litigation with unreasonable judgements, they almost have no choice but to recall products at the slightest hint of a problem.
Send me all your unwanted frozen pizza products. I will eat them all (not at the same time.)
@warf0x0r: Even cheap nasty ten-for-a-buck frozen pizza is still pizza.
This is gonna devastate the college population! Lets just hope that the ramen remains pure, otherwise, campuses around the county are gonna be hit hard!
@SHERRYNESS
So should I sanitize the counters and wash my hands after cooking my kid a waffle? Are Popsicles included in this debacle?
“I treat all frozen food like it was raw hamburger meat – don’t touch anything else after I’ve handled it until I wash my hands and be sure to clean any surface it touched.”
=( This makes me sad. D: But..seriously…fully cook your food and don’t freak out.
I’ve eaten Totino’s pizzas from the microwave. Cold spots? Yep, just reheat more. D:
Never got sick at all..in fact, I liked em that way but now since I learned to love the oven more…
Also…who’s actually put the pizzas directly on the rack like in the video? When I do it, the sauce kinda drips or the whole pizza sticks…even with cooking spray.
I just use a sheet pan.
@kublaconsumer: $10 for 10? I hope you’re talking about Totino’s, because Jeno’s retails here for $.72. $7.20 for 10. Jeno’s for the win!
Speaking of Jeno’s, I definitely ate a pepperoni pizza the day before the recall was announced, and have two more in my freezer. I look forward to eating those too. 12 minutes in the oven like usual and they’re so delicious covered in the dead E.coli.
@Ryuuie: I use tin foil. You don’t have to mess up a sheet pan, and it works just as well, especially for small pizzas like Jeno’s and Totino’s. For the big pizzas, you might want to use a sheet pan, but for the personals, why bother?
