Porn Spammers Get 5 Years In Prison

1318 views

It pleases us when spammers go to prison. Join us in bidding fond farewell to Jeffrey A. Kilbride, 41, of Venice, Calif., and James R. Schaffer, 41, of Paradise Valley, Ariz.. These two gentlemen have been convicted of "running an international pornographic spam ring that took in more than $1 million."

Kilbride and Schaffer began spamming in 2003, sending out millions of spam messages advertising hard-core porn sites. The messages contained graphic images that were visible to whoever opened the e-mail. Later in 2003, the two men began using servers in Amsterdam to make messages they were sending from Phoenix appear to be coming from outside the United States.

On June 25, a federal jury in Phoenix convicted the two men of sending spam messages with forged headers and domain names, conspiracy, fraud, money laundering, and obscenity charges.

Have fun in prison, douchebags!

Showing someone's private parts is obscene but 90% of the crap that the RIAA peddles isn't? Or those movies where people are having their heads blown off by shotguns? Ridiculous. Shocking!

Good to hear. 2 spammers down, only a couple hundred thousand or so to go.

At least they got two of the worst kind. Now if only they could nail the ones who insist twenty times a day that I need a pill because size does matter.

According to a study that Slashdot linked to a little while ago, about 95% of all email traffic on the Intartubez is now nothing more than spam. I hope that these types of arrests keep up... it would be wonderful if we could make that number shrink a little.

Ironic, that they'll now be the ones getting "spammed" in the big house.

all of that only gets you 5 years?

A cool Million for 5 years... i have a feeling they will be back at it in 2.5 years, good behavior and all.

Uh, how is that possible? Arizona subpoenaed a Dutch server over a spam matter? There's no other conceivable way they could have found out.

The problem with that is the bulk of the sentence will have had nothing to do with the spam. We need prison sentences for spam itself, not only when they've committed other offences like fraud & money laundering - those are what will have piled on the time in this case.

@hardisonthefloor: yeah, they didn't have any marijuana on them. If they had a few ounces of pot, it would have been a mandatory 10.

Meh.
I read this and tried to care about the guys going to prison, but couldn't.
I really hate spam. It clogs the server and I have to write clever filters for it.
Say "hi" to Bubba for us, guys!

Normally, I'm completely against the death penalty. But spammers are no better than cockroaches and ought to be shot. They got off easy.

It would have been sweeter if the judge took all their ill-gotten cash too.

There is a special place in hell reserved just for spammers; i'm sure of it.

I think they should really start focusing on people who phish myspace accounts and use them to send out porn to everyone. Especially the ones who get ahold of underage kid's accounts and start sending spam out that way. People need to get a life.

I hope these guys get sent to one of those "Pound me in the butt" prisons. It used to kill me when my 16 year old daughter was getting graphic porn spam from cumfiesta website. Although she is an adult now, that was NOT the education my daughter needed. Although I think that those that are against the death penalty eat too many Fruity Pebbles, death would be too harsh. Put them in a cell with a big guy named Buba!

For the record, I am a HUGE fan of Hormel's spam that is shown in the picture.

Guys, I hate spammers as much as anyone else, but prison rape "humor" in the comment thread? Do we really need to sink that low?
