Mortgage Office Manager Charged With ID Theft, Grand Larceny
A branch manager of a Queens, NY mortgage company has been caught opening fake Home Depot accounts using personal information obtained from loan applications and has been charged with grand larceny, says the NYT.
Mr. Milton is an immigrant from Bangladesh who was granted political asylum by the United States who had a cable television program in Queens for fellow immigrants from his homeland, the police said.Milton didn't stop there, he's also accused of mortgage fraud. The Times says its "unclear" as to whether or not Milton was taking out fraudulent mortgages for use in his "side buisiness"—flipping houses.He worked for the Griffin Mortgage Company as manager of its branch at 72-32 Broadway, in Jackson Heights, and his sister was his secretary, the police said. The mortgage office was where the first six complainants had divulged personal financial information when they applied for loans, the police said. Many were seeking to become first-time homeowners.
But because the quoted interest rates were too high, the applicants withdrew and looked elsewhere. Some discovered their identities had been stolen when other mortgage companies ran credit checks, the police said.
Some victims also received bills from Home Depot for as much as $30,000 for merchandise they had not ordered or received, the police said.

The numbers relate to the nearest cross street or avenue. (Queens is mostly numbered streets, drives, places, roads & avenues... all repeatng numbers.)
72-32 Broadway means the place is on Broadway between 72nd & 73rd streets. Since it's at 32 I would guess it's closer to 72nd than 73rd.
What exactly does his immigration status and orgin have to do with anything?

Some people find that it adds insult to injury when a criminal has been granted political asylum (which is not easy to get) and the privilege (yes, privilege) of becoming a U.S. citizen and then chooses to bilk not only his adopted countrymen but his fellow immigrants.
It adds insult to injury (and becomes newsworthy) when someone who has been granted not only the privilege of becoming a U.S. citizen (yes, it is a privilege, and not a right, unless one is born here), but also political asylum, chooses to use his position to bilk his fellow countrymen.

@llcooljabe: It doesn't say that he's been granted citizenship. If he's a permanent resident, a felony conviction can get him deported. While it has no bearing on the case from the perspective of the victims, it may from Mr. Milton's point of view.
Asylum does not equal citizenship. The status will matter to the victims and companies seeking restitution has he is likely to be deported if convicted.
@llcooljabe: Because he was given the opportunity to restart his life in a better place and he pooched it. Because he took our help and then turned around and screwed over the other people who were here for the same thing. They thought he was trustworthy cause he was or had been in the same boat.

I wonder if he got an adjustable rate mortgage for his victims or a fixed rate. Not applying for a mortgage is one thing, but getting an ARM when you never applied for it is just cruel.
What's with the multiple number addresses in NY? "72-32 Broadway?" I can understand if we're talking about rural areas.. My grandparents' pre-911 (phone number, not date) address was "14-15 Thousand Pines," for the lot numbers and subdivision they lived in, but I doubt that what appears to be a very urban section of New York still uses lot numbers...
