Kmart Worker Who Put Rat Poison In Ground Beef Sentenced To 1 Year House Arrest
The pissed off Kmart worker who tried to get revenge against the store by putting rat poison in the ground beef has been sentenced to a year of house arrest, plus $4,000 in restitution to Kmart.
Karen Wyndham usually worked in the dairy section of the North Charleston, S.C. Kmart. She was asked to move to another section of the store and rebelled by tainting several packages of ground beef.
From the AP:
Upset about the way Kmart treated its workers, Wyndham told agents she put rat poison in several beef packages to "slow down the meat department's money making by cutting into their sales," according to an affidavit.The tampering was discovered by another Kmart employee and no tainted meat was sold.

Maybe I'm just overreacting, but that seems like too lenient a punishment for purposely poisoning meat.
Yeah, that's some BS there. She should definitely be going to prison for that.
What the hell? Someone could have died, and she only gets a year of house arrest?

Why would you want to get revenge on your company by hurting people not affiliated with the it? I get the point that she wanted to "cut into their sales," but at the cost of another human's well-being? It sounds pretty selfish. I don't see what she did as a protest; she feels the company wronged her and she decided to retaliate.
I don't even know how good her claim is. She works at a store, her manager tells her to work in a certain department. If she had moral qualms about working with meat, it's one thing. But that doesn't seem to be the case.
Why not "taint" the meat in a safe way? Maybe use some sort of food coloration or anything else that achieves a similar effect to create the illusion of rotten/unsafe food. She'd get her revenge and no one's livelihood is put in jeopardy (well, besides her own, if she's caught and fired)!

I sympathize with her on the fact that she's "attached" to her section, but poisoning meats is taking it too far.
That's an insultingly lenient sentence for so serious a crime. And why does KMart get $4000 out of it? Is that the fair market value of the meat they had to throw away?

Maybe this was at a Kmart Super Center, where they have a grocery store inside a regular type Kmart. That sounds lke the case.

Yeah, the intent to harm was there; jail time would be more appropriate, I think.
I think the main reason this person got off so easy is due to no one actually being poisoned. Had their been a more aggressive DA though, I'd think an attempted murder charge could have applied.
If it was Jack McCoy it would have been Man 1 10 to 15. Plus there would have been an awesome twist at the end. the S.C DA could due to brush up on his Law and Order.

Strange that someone that could have killed 10-20 people with intentional malice gets 1 year house arrest, but a 17 year old male having consensual sex with a girl 2 years his junior gets 10 years without the chance of parole...(and yes, I know it was overturned). Just says something about our moral nanny state these days. Sex = Satan himself, Murder = eh, that's kinda bad I guess.

You would think that they could have charged her under some of the new anti-terrorisim laws since she clearly could have sickened or killed many people.
I agree with a lot of the other posters. This is ATTEMPTED MURDER. In most States that's a Class I felony with probably a 5yr sentence minimum. Was the judge paid off??
WTF, whether or not anyone bought the meat doesn't matter! If you plant a bomb in a building and it doesn't go off, you still had the intent to harm people!
The FBI got involved and she got to plea guilty to one count of tampering? WTF?
She's probably happy to be under house arrest: I'm sure her neighbors aren't happy with the fact that she tried to kill them.
@quarterly: It is too leniant punishment especially beacuse Tampering with consumer goods is a federal offense. not to mention she can also get slapped with Attempted murder charges & extortion.
