Great Moments In Commercial History: Jhoon Rhee

1555 views
This Jhoon Rhee commercial was suggested by a number of readers, including Vicki, who writes:
Your "Great Moments in Commercial History" postings made me recall this commercial from my childhood, which ran on Washington DC stations in the days before cable. I remembered it as the "Nobody bothers me!" commercial, I couldn't even remember the company or product.

I always assumed the kids at the end were Jhoon Rhee's kids, like in those car dealership commercials. Regardless of what they said, I bet they got beat up a lot.

WOW! I grew up with that commercial! I haven't seen it in probably 20 years or more. I forgot the song (but now it's stuck in my head) but I never forgot the little kids at the end. I used to say those lines all the time - "Nobody bothers me, nobody bothers either!" HAHAHAH That is such a blast from the past. Thanks so much for posting this!

I too loved this. Growing up in the Nova area, this was quite the joke amongst my friends.

Wow.. I remember that commercial too and I was only in the DC area from birth until 3 or so. It is so crazy the stuff you remember!!!!

Funny thing is - I live in Kingstowne and there's a Jhoon Rhee right down the street from my house...

Everytime we pass it I always sing "Call USA-1000, Jhoon Rhee means might for right!" and my wife is like, what the hell are you talking about???

@AndyRogers: That's awesome. Where is there a Jhoon Rhee around here? I live near Kingstowne too.

@SPARTAN -

At the intersection of South King's Highway and Telegraph Rd. Used to be the Generous Georges. I swear, I've had that song stuck in my head since 1983.

I lived in Chantilly, VA (basically a suburb of DC) for a good chunk of the 80's. I remember these commercials quite well.

I don't even have to watch the video. I think I know the song:

If you call Jhoon Rhee self-defense
Then you too can saaayyyyy
Nobody bothers meeeee
Nobody bothers meeeee

call USA-one-thousand
jhoooooon
rheeee
means might for right

Or something like that.
Am I right?

(Such is my stupid memory. Can't remember my wife's eye color, but go ahead and quiz me on bad 80's commercials for local businesses!)

Of all the places in Washington, DC, the heart of American politics, a martial arts class gets USA-1000?

user-pic

This song has been playing in my head non-stop since I saw this post yesterday. Make it stop!!!

p.s. I had no idea this business still existed!

This is the perfect commercial! An addicting jingle, and cute kids! Genius!!!

I better give this guy a call.

@harleymcc:
That's not Weird Al - it's Nils Lofgren!

(Nils started his musical career in the DC area.)
