Time Warner Repairman Jailed For Sexual Assault
If a creepy Time Warner repairman says he wants to 'be with you' while on a service call, you probably shouldn't let him back in your house. After making the comment, Steven James Hernandez was dispatched back to the house to fix a problem outside; instead, he decided to bang on the 28 year-old woman's door. From KENS 5:
Police said the banging at the door lasted at least 15 minutes, and the man at the door was Hernandez.Don't ever hesitate to report any technician that acts suspiciously. If you feel uncomfortable, invite a neighbor over to keep you company while the tech works."He started to yell at her, and was belligerent, demanding why was it that she didn't open the door sooner," Gutierrez said.
The warrant said Hernandez was there to fix a problem outside, but the woman said he forced his way in, saying he needed to look at equipment upstairs.
Police said the woman later went to see if Hernandez was done and sat down on the edge of her bed as he worked at a desk. The warrant said Hernandez turned around, started to strangle her, and put a cable tool to her neck as he tried to remove her pants. The woman said Hernandez also hit her with a cell phone.
Investigators said the woman broke free and ran downstairs, but Hernandez caught up with her, threw her on a couch, and tried to force himself on her.
Police said the woman pushed him away and he left. The woman said Hernandez threatened to return. The woman then called police at about 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
The police, with the help of Time Warner, tracked down and arrested Hernandez for attempted sexual assault. He has been fired, and faces up to ten years behind bars.

Yeah, if someone forcing their way inside, strangling you with cable tools, then forcing himself on you counts as suspicious, then I wonder what obvious would entail?
I joke, I joke, but in all seriousness, I don't think I would let in anyone that was banging on my door if I didn't already recognize him.

This is a huge catch 22. Many cable companies switched to independent contractor installers to limit their liabiilty in these types of situations.
The irony is that their very status as an independent contractor, and the lack of ongoing personnel controls you would see for employees, contributes even more to this problem.
@spinachdip: @dantc: Fuzzing awesome.
I guess time warner couldn't wait to screw her on her bill... They just sent "Hernandez" around to give her immediate service... (yeah bad joke...)
@Papa Midnight: Or the Comcastic guy in Chicago who last year raped and murdered two women while on service calls, leaving them bound and dead in the bathtub.
@FLConsumer: Or when the guy forced his way in. I dunno. Good for her for getting away though.
It's a shame none of her neighbors heard the knocking (or heard and ignored it).
@SkyeBlue: They probably would.
@Papa Midnight: That made me so angry.
Some people aren't reading carefully... he had been there before, at which time he made the creepy "want to be with you" statement. I think THAT is when they were recommending that she should've complained. And it's probably why she let him bang on the door for 15 min before answering it, though why she answered it at all is anyone's guess.
It would've been better for her if she'd been prepared to defend herself (as Oldhat suggests) but she should never have HAD to. He should've have been working in a job where he went into customers' homes if he's that kind of nutjob.
@oldhat:
Bravo. EVERY American should own and know how to use a gun. For the same reason you wear a seat belt...just in case you need it.
@JayP71: I have done better than that. Three pitbulls, 2 rotweilers, 1 kumodo dragon, a flame thrower, and a panzerschrek. God, I love this country.
Ugh... independent contractors... the pain of my daily job. Im an In House TWC Service Repair Specialist Tech (long ass title, isnt it) and my day regularly consists of how shitty our contractors are. My advice: request a TWC in house tech and they have to provide one of us, someone who gives a damn about his job

Now about that Comcastic guy who got off even with valid DNA evidence?
