Here's a list of 18 Overlooked Things Everyone Should Bring to College, we agree with most of them, though you should check with your roommate before you bring a microwave. No one needs two microwaves. Oh, and you should also bring a budget. [College and Finance via Digg]

Minor complication: your dorm may not allow microwaves. They didn't at my alma mater (well, freshman year, as the rest of the time I had an on-campus apartment and, consequently, a kitchen), and it's been my experience that's probably the rule.

A hotpot is also extremely useful, whether you can have a microwave or not. You can only really make hot drinks and ramen noodles with it, but that's often enough.

Perhaps I'm just paranoid but do you really want to wear industrial strength earplugs in your sleep? How are you supposed to hear a fire alarm?

Microwaves, hotpots, George Foreman grills -- anything that generates heat might be prohibited. You could probably contact your school's residential life department beforehand and find out what's allowed/not allowed. I imagine some schools have some sort of FAQ on their website.
