529 College Savings Plans By State

2066 views

Bankrate has comprehensive state-by-state map of 529 college savings plans. In case you're not familiar, a 529 plan is a "tax-advantaged" savings plan that is designed to encourage people to start saving for college tuition. From the SEC:

There are two types of 529 plans: pre-paid tuition plans and college savings plans. All fifty states and the District of Columbia sponsor at least one type of 529 plan. In addition, a group of private colleges and universities sponsor a pre-paid tuition plan.
You can learn more about 529 plans at the Security & Exchange commission's website, and compare them at Bankrate.com. Keep in mind: Not all 529 plans are the same, some are better investments than others.

I highly recommend 529's. We made a 10% return on our daughter's last year!

529 plans are great tools for college savings...the tax deferral is great. Not to mention the ability for large amounts of money to be "gifted" on an annual basis. Anyone planning to send a child to college should set one up.
