FDA Names "Food Safety Czar"
The FDA has appointed a "Director of the Food Safety and Security Staff," which the media has shortened to "Food Safety Czar." The new Director of Food Safety is David W.K. Acheson, M.D, whom we will, naturally, be nicknaming "David W.K."
David W.K. (no relation), is also known as the guy who told NPR that bagged lettuce was not safe to eat. In that interview, we got the distinct impression that David W.K.was ready to get down to business. Still, the questions linger.
Can David W.K. fix the broken U.S. Food Safety System? Can he make it so the same inspectors are in charge of both open-faced sandwiches and regular ones? Can he protect us from evil Chinese catfish? Salmonella Walmart peanut butter? Deadly pet food?
Quick, someone ask the "Drug Czar" how the title has been working out for him.—MEGHANN MARCO

Aw, geez. Why don't they just DO THEIR JOB?
Why is it that we're now appointing people whose job it is to make sure the government agencies gutted by the congress and political operatives work better?
Wouldn't it be a good idea to hire and appoint competent people in the first place?
I have a feeling this is just another of the current Republican "make government services look so egregiously bad that we can safely farm everything out to our cronies..uh, private enterprise" strategy.
@nytmare: It actually depends on the food as to who governs the safety. The FDA and USDA are the two main groups, with the FDA doing tests on the food much less frequently than the USDA.
@nytmare: Sounds like another "Brownie" if you ask me. Gotta make sure the intentional destruction goes as planned (and nobody tries to stop it)

Well, to reform the FDA, he would have to repeal over 80% of american drugs because they only treat symptom, some drugs are outdated and even illegal elsewhere, and not to mention that some drugs have worse side effects than the symptoms they treat...
How in the hell is heart attack and blood clot an acceptable symptom to birth control pills.
