Try Google 411

1183 views

Need directory assistance?

Google is testing a new free directory assistance search. It's not perfect yet, but you can give it a whirl by calling 1-800-GOOG-411 (1-800-466-4411) from any phone.

If you call from your cell phone and want the details by SMS, just say "text message."

It's free to call and free to connect. —MEGHANN MARCO

Google Voice Local Search

This is a test using rich text formatting and html links. It's the generic "company" ad that should appear on all posts with the Company category if they don't have an ad attached to a specific company.

Google already has a similar feature through text messaging called Google Info (though I don't know how well-known it is). Text the name of the business, city and state to 46645, and Google will reply by text message with the address and telephone number. If you have a text messaging package through your carrier, it's free.

Actually for texting you can just text to the number GOOGLE or 466453.

It needs work/contributors. It could tell me the name and symbol of the Jamacian Dollar (JMD) but not the exchange.

Pretty cool.

Consumerist, how hypocrytical are your ways! Just a week or so ago you told us not to use it because they collected our info! Oh my...

Not even a week ago. The first post was dated April 8... so... Sunday.

I used this today in Utah, and it worked great for me. It was really convenient.

It doesn't know my town too well yet, but it seems like they do care enough to improve it. Anyone notice a weird demonic voice thingy in the background when it loads the next prompt?
