I recently received a packet from IBM pertaining to potential identity theft. It indicated that in February of this year a tape containing personal information was lost. Supposedly it only affects past employees of IBM. Actually, I am not certain that it actually originated at IBM. I have searched the consumerist and was surprised to find not one reference to this incident. Is IBM keeping a lid on things ? Or is this a case of phishing ? Does anyone know anything about this particular situation ? A form requesting person information is included in the packet. The enclosed letter indicates that the personal information is used to sign the potential victim up for a credit monitoring service from a company named KROLL.
