Tell Your Senator To Oppose Nominating Guy Who Hates Product Safety As Head Of Product Safety

Eight consumers groups have united to oppose the nomination of Michael Baroody for the head of the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Baroody is the executive vice president of the National Association of Manufacturers, which has consistently worked to undermine the very efforts of the organization Bush knighted Baroody to helm.

While Baroody worked at NAM, they:

• Opposed a CPSC proposal to improve safety standards for baby walkers. Instead, NAM blamed parents for improperly supervising their children;
• Opposed a petition from consumer organizations to improve the way the consumers find out about recalls of potentially dangerous children’s products;
• Supported diluting guidelines companies used to determine whether they must report substantial product hazards; and
• Urged New York Governor George Pataki to veto legislation that mandated fire safe cigarettes

Concerned consumers should write their Senator and ask for thumbs down during Baroody’s confirmation hearing, tentatively scheduled for May 3rd. — BEN POPKEN

    OMG, get that guy out of there! A healthy democracy functions with checks and balances, not giving one special group too much power.

    I sent e-mails to both of my Congressional representatives. Here’s re-print:

    During Michael Baroody’s confirmation hearing for the head of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, tentatively scheduled for May 3rd, I would like you to give him the thumbs down! Please do not vote to approve this child hating monster.

    Please do not allow this man to assume this job. It’s bad business for our children.

    This is too important an issue for Consumerist devotees to simply scroll past.

    I sent emails to both of my senators, and it took less than 5 minutes to do. To me, it was more than worth the effort – and very easy.

    Don’t let Bush get away with putting another of his band of idiots/cronies/Rethuglican pinstripe punks in a position of power.

    We need to sit down for our rights as consumers – at the keyboard, that is!

  4. With Commandant Boosh appointing guys like this to head federal agencies…you think all the e. coli breakouts this year and other watchdog slipups are complete accidents?

  5. eyeraw says:

    That’s abhorrent. Even though Bush is blatantly villainous – you’ll watch something or read something every now and again that makes you think that somewhere in the back of his mind there is a genuine bit of interest in helping America and at least being sort of ‘strong’ for us. But this has to be the most clear-cut demonstration that it IS NOT THE CASE. There’s not a shred of concern there, just full-throttle ‘f**king over’ of the American people. 100 percent. Game over.

    @SteveD1of1: I also emailed my senators. Here’s hoping they listen for once.

    This is small potato(s) to Kennedy’s Senate Bill 1082 that will effectively put the FDA into the drug business…link: http://www.newstarget.com/021811.html

    i’m interested to see if my comment here is actually posted, it will serve me well to know if it’s worth it to post here or not, this article is NOTHING compared to this Senate Bill that’s about to voted on…vitamins, minerals, hell even “hot rocks” for massage will be legislated away as “medical devices” by the FDA! Talk about a nightmare?…this is it….and Ted Kennedy brings this? geesh, isn’t there an AA meeting he’s missing? oh, they’ll be regulated as well as “practicing medicine without a license” if this bill passes…no kidding…read the Bill.

    Everything that’s gone on the last six years and THIS is the most clear-cut demonstration that Bush is not that concerned about most American people? You gotta be kidding.

  9. HeroProtagonist says:

    What the hell is a “fire safe cigarette”? The last time I checked, cigarettes were *supposed* to burn…
