Honda Models From 1995-1997 May Be Eligible For Free Inspections, Repairs

If you purchased a Honda between 1995 and 1997, you may be eligible for a free repair and tune up. Way back, during the age of Clinton, the EPA sued Honda for disabling part of the emission control system, which could lead several vehicle models to emit pollutants without issuing an engine warning to the driver. The EPA spanked Honda with a $12.6 million penalty, and the automaker agreed to spend at least $250 million repairing the defective systems. Here is where you come in.

You may be eligible for a free repair if you purchased a 1996 or 1997 model year Accord, Civic, Odyssey, or Prelude, or a 1995 Honda Civic. If you are eligible, what you get depends on your vehicle’s mileage.

  • 50,000-75,000 miles: You get a free engine inspection and a free emission system repair.
  • 75,000-150,000 miles: You get a free engine inspection, free emission system repair, and a free tune up.
  • Over 150,000 miles: Nothing. You get nothing, unless you repaired the emission system and can document the costs.

It is estimated there are 1.6 million affected vehicles on the road. Most of them are probably approaching, if they have not already exceeded, the 150,000 mile limit. Call your local Honda dealer if you think your vehicle may be eligible. — CAREY GREENBERG-BERGER
