Home Depot Thinks 'Lorem Ipsum' Is Spanish

63877 views

Consumerist Flickr Pool member brylyn says, "Saw this while shopping for ceiling lights in Home Depot."

For those of you not familiar with "lorem ipsum," it's commonly used placeholder text dating from the 1500's. The text was created by scrambling words from a passage of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Marcus Tullius Cicero. —MEGHANN MARCO

This is a test using rich text formatting and html links. It's the generic "company" ad that should appear on all posts with the Company category if they don't have an ad attached to a specific company.

as a person in the graphic arts field, that's hysterical!

Interesting, I never knew the history of Lorem Ipsum. I always assumed it was a made up gibberish to use as filler, I didn't actually think it had roots.

Looks like someone tried to used Microsoft Publisher. =P

As someone who took Latin in high school, and whose parents speak Spanish, I'm falling off my chair laughing.

Looks like Andrew Dan-Jumbo has his work cut out for him. I think his name might be lorem ipsum.

LOL... shame on you home depot (or your products actually)

This appears to be a product that home depot sells making it the manufacturers problem and not Home Depot's. Put blame where blame is due.

Is it possible that the only put "Lorem Ipsum" there because they didn't have the spanish name for the item handy when they started on the item and forgot to finish getting the text prior to sending it out for printing?
It is a pretty funny mistake though. :)

I always thought "Lorem" meant "FastAttach" in Spanish.

That's a classic. By which I mean it's a classic error that any pro can relate to. It's always the headline or the big, bold title that everyone forgets to proofread. That's why you see "penis" instead of "pen is," "pubic" instead of "public," etc. in the strangest places. "Lorem ipsum" errors show up in books, newspapers, and magazines regularly.

See http://www.lipsum.com/ for more on the history, plus the full text.

As a tech writer--

Nullam convallis turpis quis lacus.

Bwahahahahahahaha

that's easy for you to say.................

"Lorem ipsum" also shows up in document titles in web searches -- see http://www.microtype.com/Hmmms.html#0701 for examples.
