Halliburton Moves HQ From Houston To Dubai
Halliburton CEO Dave Lesar today announced they're moving the headquarters from Texas to the United Arab Emirates. From the Washington Post:
Lesar's announcement appears to signal one of the highest-profile moves by a U.S. corporate leader to Dubai, an Arab boomtown where free-market capitalism has been paired with some of the world's most liberal tax, investment and residency laws."The eastern hemisphere is a market that is more heavily weighted toward oil exploration and production opportunities and growing our business here will bring more balance to Halliburton's overall portfolio," Lesar said.
Looks like they can't participate in our "Worst Company in America" contest next year, the penultimate rounds of which begin tomorrow. — BEN POPKEN

Well, that's mighty patriotic of them. No point in just gouging the American taxpayer with no-bid contracts, massive cost overruns, and widespread corruption. Might as well finish the job off by fleeing the country with the profits so they don't have to pay their share of taxes.
I have one request for the next administration - could our next war be in Dubai? It could be a very limited operation, just something to take out the headquarters of some US companies that decided to flee to a tax haven. We could call it Operation Desert Tax Collector.
Halliburton caught wind of your contest and thought they could lay low in Dubai. The Steve Miller Band said it best- "Go on take the money and run".
Halliburton can hone their evil skills better without U.S. constraints and attention. Not to worry, I'm sure they'll still screw us from afar.
i'm with cleveland... french companies can't qualify for Iraq contracts, but a UAE-based company can get the lion's share?
Didn't everyone make a big stink about giving Dubai US port defense contracts a few months back? Shouldn't Halliburton, as an Arab Emirate corporation, now be excluded from things like that, too? After all, we can't trust them a-rab emirs... especially the white texan ones.
Whoops, Ben. Another sort of misleading article. Has quality control slipped on Consumerist? We don't want the site to become a laughingstock - it'll detract from the good that you guys do.
From NY Times:
The company will maintain its existing corporate office here as well as its legal incorporation in the United States, meaning that it will still be subject to domestic laws and regulations.
So they're moving their Exec Staff to Dubai, not reincorporating as an unAmerican company... The article should be more clear about this, IMO...
You DON'T want to give ammo to the consumer-hating companies out there that Consumerist is unreliable.
I'm all in favor of the move, if it means no more sweetheart no-bid contracts for them!
Think about it, this could mark the beginning of the end for one of the seedier business relationships in recent American politics. Bush/Cheney will be gone in 2 years, Halliburton is voluntarily leaving this sinking ship like the rats they are.

Well, that seals my vote. Fucking evil incarnate, they are.
