Consumerist Smack Deal At 3pm Eastern

4710 views

We're just a few hours away from The Consumerist/Jellyfish Smack Deal, where you guys have a chance to get up to 80% off snazzy products you voted on.

These products are a Wii, XBOX360, CanonSD640, Quicken, TurboTax, Mitsubishi HD1000U front projector, Sony Ericsson k790a, Tivo Series 3, Zune, Roomba, Scooba, Nokia N800, Zojirushi 5 1/2 cup rice cooker, KitchenAid Pro Line burr coffee grinder, Iomega Esata 300GB External Hard Drive, Sennheiser PXC300 Noise Cancelling Headphones, 80GB Video iPod.

We can't guarantee the Wii will be available for mass purchase. HOWEVER, Jellyfish tells us you guys should have a chance to win at least one via the "Smack Wheel."

Here's how the Smack Deal works...

Jellyfish's Smack Deal of the Day is a reverse auction: as time passes, price drops. The game is to buy the product at the lowest price possible. Towards the end it can get as low as 80% off. The trick is that you don't know how many units are in stock, so if you wait too long... you lose out. Side games and real-time chat make for a rollicking time.

At checkout, players pay full price, but receive the cash back via check or Paypal within 60 days. Unlike a rebate, there's no breakage, you are guaranteed to receive this money without fail. The only reason for the 60-day wait is for most store's return policies to expire so people don't turn around and try to return the goods for full price.

You can follow the link below to sign up, then check back in before 3. Even if you don't shop, it might be an amusing experience to watch. — BEN POPKEN

My vote is for the 360 (fortunately, I already have a Wii)

Ben, Any chance you would tell us how this came about? When you say we "are guaranteed to receive this money without fail", I don't think The Consumerist would be that trusting of other sites -- is the site operator someone you know?

(FYI I've purchased on this site -- I view it as a gamble -- they have only been in business since November and seem to be a very small operation that could sink like a rock if this pyramid breaks.)

Thanks

Well Aaron from Jellyfish approached me and we talked about it in email and over the phone. They've got national press, their reviews are positive, and other Consumerist readers in the comments have said they've used the place to great success. Having no reason to suspect otherwise, I trust these guys.

As I've said before, there's no money changing hands on the backend. We just wanted this to be a cool thing for Consumerist readers.

I don't really see it as a pyramid, Jellyfish get their merchants to supply x number of units at depreciated cost because the merchant knows y will be sold at full cost during the auction. Basically you're looking at an order with a bulk discount and parts of that discount are applied increasingly to the items sold at the end of the auction.

So the k790a will actually be listed? Because I'd absolutely love to own one.

user-pic

I'm pulling for the 360, but may find a nice home for some of the other items.

IN NO EVENT SHALL JELLYFISH BE LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGES, CLAIMS OR LOSSES INCURRED (INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION COMPENSATORY, INCIDENTAL, INDIRECT, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR EXEMPLARY DAMAGES), HOWEVER CAUSED AND UNDER ANY THEORY OF LIABILITY ARISING IN CONNECTION WITH YOUR USE OF THE JELLYFISH.COM WEBSITE OR ACCOUNT, ANY ACT OR OMISSION BY JELLYFISH IN ADMINISTERING THE WEBSITE OR ACCOUNT, OR THE PURCHASE OR USE OF ANY GOODS OR SERVICES OF MERCHANTS AFFILIATED WITH THE JELLYFISH.COM WEB SITE, EVEN IF JELLYFISH HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES, CLAIMS, OR LOSSES.

YOU AGREE TO INDEMNIFY AND HOLD JELLYFISH, ITS PARENTS, SUBSIDIARIES, AFFILIATES, OFFICERS, DIRECTORS AND EMPLOYEES, HARMLESS FROM ANY CLAIM OR DEMAND, INCLUDING REASONABLE ATTORNEY'S FEES, MADE BY ANY THIRD PARTY DUE TO OR ARISING OUT OF YOUR USE OF THE JELLYFISH.COM WEBSITE OR ACCOUNT.

with other words jellyfish.com will happily get commission to point you to a "wallmart" quality merchant, willing to sell at the cheapest possible price just to make the sale and god forbid anything should go wrong. DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK... you know those auctions on ebay selling you information on how to save a shit load of money on whatever product? this is the same thing, just marketed in a nice corporate package.

ps. how much are you getting paid per referral ben?

user-pic

* Those are pretty standard waivers of liability.

* We get nothing per referral. It was offered but I turned it down.

user-pic

Sweet, I love smack. Any chance for some surgical tubing or Velvet Underground cd's? Defibrilator might be a nice coffee table item.

user-pic

The verification email is broken for me. Guess no smack for the frog!

user-pic

Heh, just won a t-shirt over there for guessing the percentage off on an item. Beginner's luck.

user-pic

I'm not sure I understand what Consumerist readers (and editors) are getting out of this. Assuming Ben is really not getting any kind of commission or anything...

Other than that "we" voted for the merchandise (we did? ack, I missed it!), why, exactly, should we go shop at Jellyfish? Because they put the word "Consumerist" up? Is there an extra discount or something? Because if not, it looks like the jellyfish people just talked the editors here into sending them god knows how many new customers, taking advantage of the fact that we trust Consumerist not to, you know, send us to a dealer where the deals may not be that great or something (I have no idea if they are or not at jellyfish. i haven't checked).

Just playing devil's advocate, here. And if this has already been explained and I managed to miss it, my apologies and feel free to throw tomatoes at me.

user-pic

they may be standard waivers, but isn't that the whole point of this place, to help consumers at the very least with the most information possible?

also, attaching the consumerist.com name says that you endorse jellyfish.com. that's a bit hypocritical for this site isn't it?

user-pic

Guess us Canadian Consumers aren't allowed to join in the fun, eh, Ben??

user-pic

Hey, I'm happy that I'd get any chance to possibly purchase a Wii for a discounted price, so I don't care! Consumerist, THANK YOU!

user-pic

Yeah, we're full of shit. Don't win a Wii, don't get 80% off an iPod.

user-pic

lol ben, now that's honesty :)

user-pic

I must admit, I'm enjoying the site.

Thanks for the midday fun, Consumerist.

user-pic

Xbox 360 is up NOW

user-pic

xbox 360 is up right now...31% off so far

user-pic

The comment system is way, way too annoying. I will not be returning to said site again...

Thanks though Ben!

user-pic

What did the xbox 360's end up going for? (Just so I can kick the @$$ of the person in my office who had a tech issue that needed "fixing" while the sale was going on...)

user-pic

I didn't buy anything, but it was actually fun. I enjoyed guessing the winning percent.

user-pic

Aw, damnit, the 360 comes up after I leave to go look for a 360.

user-pic

I keep getting an error message: our tenticles are tangled.

I am confused!

user-pic

I could use a Corvette Z06. I'd like to get one of those for 80% off.
