Aveda Secretly Pulls Environmentally Unfriendly Hair Product?

4261 views

According to a company insider, Aveda recently pulled a hair product from their shelves because it contained too many or too high a concentration of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can be nasty pollutants.

This has not been announced anywhere, except for a mention on the company's product page which says, "Unfortunately, BrilliantTM Spray-On Shine can no longer be shipped to customers the following states: Delaware, District of Columbia, Maine, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Connecticut and Rhode Island. "

AVEDA's built it's entire brand of beauty products around being all-natural and organic, all its products are said to be plant and flower based, so it's no surprise they're not shouting this from the trees they hug. Our tipster says:

VOCs are not good for the environment or for us to breathe in. Customers coming in looking for their shine fix are NOT told this-- we are to give them some kind of line about Aveda always improving their products and blah blah and lets go buy something more expensive. This is because employees job security is based on how much they sell, these numbers are tracked hourly.

Not all VOCs are bad. Trees emit them. So do gas, solvents and paint thinner.

I do believe that after Estee Lauder acquired Aveda years ago, Aveda stipulated that all existing products must continue to be made with the same established natural products whereas anything developed after that point would not be held to the same high standards. I'm pretty sure the Brilliant Spray-on Shine came after all of that.

I just stick with the old stuff: shampure, confixor, elixir, etc.

I stick with using Burt's Bees stuff.

I don't know who your "inside source" is but I work for Aveda and Brilliant Shine Spray has NOT been recalled. When Estee Lauder acquired or company it was sold with the stipulation that they had to mainatin the integrity of the whole line. As an added note the company was sold in 1997 and the Brilliant line was most definitely well established before that date. Company employees, distribution salons, etc. job security is not based on how much you sell. While selling the products doesn't hurt your business you will not suffer job loss for selling too little. Aveda strives to be environmentally sound in a world that is just now catching onto the damages that have been done. It's not a perfect company, but they're above average when compared with others. Oh and Burt's Bees? While their products are great....their makeup? I didn't know the glitter/shimmer in their lipsticks was found in nature. If you want to be informed try reading a label instead of bashing a company that has been making strides in environmental conservation since the seventies.
