From the Boston Globe:

"With help from US Secret Service agents, Stop & Shop Supermarket Cos. executives scrambled yesterday to determine how many consumers may have had their credit and debit card data stolen by high-tech thieves who apparently broke into checkout-line card readers and planted the equivalent of bugs to steal information."

Stop and Shop stores with confirmed stolen info:
Coventry and Cranston, R.I.

Stop and Shop stores with confirmed tampering:
Seekonk and in Bristol, Providence, and Warwick, R.I.

Anyone who shops at Stop and Shop should check their statements for fraudulent charges and report any they find. —MEGHANN MARCO

Providence RI Stop & Shop -- that would be "mine." Fortunately I only pay for our groceries with (ahem, dinosaur alert) checks.

Our local newspaper accounts include praise for Stop & Shop's quick action in alerting law enforcement, banks, and individuals, as contrasted with TJX Co's pokiness in sharing news of its compromised customer info recently.

Forget watching your card and waiting for a potential fraud, just declare the card lost or stolen and get a new number. The best defense is a good offense!

What's up, Consumerist? You're not going to unnecessarily poke fun at Rhode Island this time? Oh right, Ben didn't write this.

Wasn't our buddy Fran working at a Target in Rhode Island? I wonder what ever happened to her.

Huh? What's wrong with Rhode Island? I got the worst sunburn of my life there, but I don't know if they can be blamed. I'll stick to making fun of Illinois.

Thanks for the kind words, Meghann. I can assure you that Rhode Island was not to blame for your sunburn. I was just referring to the fact that Ben called my home state "The Mafia State" last week.

We're already the smallest state. No need to kick us when we're already down.

Someone wrote a check the other at the grovery store, and it did seem like an ancient practice to me.
