Buy Brand Name Cereal For Only $1.79 At Grand Central Northeast RiteAids

3267 views

For some inexplicable reason, you can get any box of cereal right now for $1.79 at the Rite Aid in Grand Central in Manhattan. These normally run $6-plus. $4-plus.

Plucky weekend editor Carey Greenberg-Berger confirmed this deal by driving over there and emerging with a plunder-trunk-full of breakfast delights: 24 boxes. Only 11 are pictured because he's a nice guy and gave away a bunch before taking the photo.

When asked about the deal, Rite Aid employees had no idea why the cereal was so heavily discounted. There was no visible damage to the boxes and all expiration dates looked kosher.

For non-New Yorkers, take heart in that there's still a deal to be found even in this luxor encrusted playground.

Pictures of a reaaaaallly long receipt, inside...

UPDATE: Ok, so here's the scoop, courtesy of reader Ben P. Wellington. ALL RiteAids on the Northeast have a great deal on cereal. However, it's only one brand of cereal per week. This week was Post brand cereals. For some reason, perhaps out of human kindness, the checkout lady decided to scan one box of honeycombs over and over again, rather than scan 24 individual, various boxes of cereal. You can see what's discounted each week by looking at RiteAid's weekly circular.

Quite possibly the deal of the year [This Is What We Do Now] (Thanks to John!)

Mysteriously, none of those boxes are Honeycombs.

Rite Aid has been having really good deals on cereals the past few weeks; Buy One Get One free on the brand stuff.

user-pic

Someone had the same idea yesterday and grabbed all the new Grape Nuts Trail Mix Crunch. I hate that person.

user-pic

Yeah, wait, why did they all ring up as honeycomb?

user-pic

No Frosted Flakes?! The hell with that!

user-pic

@crackblind: Bah, forget honeycombs. If you want sugar, try the Cinnamon Marshmallow Scooby-Doo Cereal. I haven't seen it in a couple of years but good Lord, that was awesome.

I'm going to hit up my rite-aid after work tonite.

Considering breakfast cereal is one of the most heavily marked-up (by the manufacturer) items in the grocery biz, this IS a good deal.

user-pic

I noticed the same thing at a grocery store here in Minneapolis.

user-pic

I originally took 23 boxes. Ringing up 23 boxes takes a while, so they scanned a spare Honeycomb 23 times. It looked good, so I took that, too.

Tony the Tiger wasn't there.

user-pic

Cool, I got 2 boxes for $5 there a few weeks back.

Fry: Honeycomb's big?
Hermes: Yea, Yea, Yea.
Bender: It's not small?
Hermes: No, No, No.

The $1.79 price for Post, Eat Well and Kashi cereals is in their weekly flyer (at least here on the West Coast). This is a good deal, but I'm not sure why you find it so exciting -- supermarkets put different brands of cereal on sale in the $2 range all the time.

user-pic

You are very lucky they used the spare Honey Comb box. Only Post Cereal is on sale this week at Rite Aid!! If they had rung you up for real, you would not have gotten that price.

@TedSez:
In Manhattan, this is a rarity. I buy all my cereal at Rite Aid because the Food Emporium consitently charges 3 times more.

user-pic

@TedSez:

I'm not really seeing the excitement here either.

I always "waddle like a duck" down the cereal isle to get the best deals...

I guess there's a lot of Seinfeld fans on the Consumerist.

user-pic

Rite-Aid is THE place to get cereal. They forever had good deals on them, 2 for 4, buy one get one free.

user-pic

Awww it almost looks like a receipt from Best Buy.

user-pic

Well, the deal is that all cereal, including Kellogs brands, are being erroneously rung up as Post Honeycomb.

user-pic

Jesus Christ, that's a deal? I have no idea why anyone lives in NYC. (Okay sure, it's the center of the financial/arts/fashion/etc. world, but $6 for a box of cereal? Ridiculous.)

user-pic

SIX DOLLARS for a box of cereal? Wow. Of course, I think $1.79 sounds high, too, for a box of processed starch and sugar.

user-pic

This post is all wrong. They aren't $6 normally. You even posted the receipt that clearly shows you're wrong.

user-pic

It comical that on the on hand we are reading about the terrible stuff in microwave popcorn and then the next celebrating bargain Fruit Loops as some kind of prize. I don't think you'd like to look at the artificially flavored slop that goes into making that garbage either.

user-pic

The lack of accurate scanning is not good for product reordering. It seems like this store will have more than enough Honey Comb and not enough of the other cereals.

user-pic

Paying $5-6 bucks for a box of brand name cereal is unfortunately not that rare in NYC.

user-pic

Dunno if somebody already beat me to this, but I love the - "Paid by Master" at the end of the receipt.

Paid By Master.

I have visions of igor and his hunchback buying cereal at rite aid.

user-pic

the checkout lady decided to scan one box of honeycombs over and over again, rather than scan 24 individual, various boxes of cereal

Ooh, she's gonna be in trouble when the electronic inventory is off...

user-pic

@Kat - thinking the same thing. You guys should redact her Cashier number, which is visible on one of the receipts.
