PayPal Restricts Eligibility For $15 Off $30 Rebate

PayPal has instituted new restrictions on its $15 off $30 rebate introduced two weeks ago. At first we thought the offer, $5 less than the rebate offered last winter, meant PayPal hated spring. We were wrong. PayPal hates you.

The old terms and conditions read:

Registration. You must first register for this offer on http://paypal.promotionexpert.com/gr…nup/index.html using your PayPal account’s primary email address.

The revised, restricted terms and conditions now read:

Registration. You must first register for this offer on http://paypal.promotionexpert.com/greatshopping/signup/index.html using your PayPal account’s primary email address. You are only eligible for this offer if you receive this offer in an email sent to you directly from PayPal.

Don’t take our word for it. We have pictures, inside.

Google’s wonderful sleaze-prevention spiders snapped the following snapshot of PayPal’s rebate page:

How nice, a spring rebate. Uh-oh, where did the rebate go?

We are very interested to know why PayPal changed the rebate terms. If you were able to redeem the rebate before the change, or if you received an invitation email, let us know in the comments. — CAREY GREENBERG-BERGER

Disgusting. I signed up for the rebate the day you put up the link to Bargainist with the offer, then bought two qualifying items on the 10th via PayPal:

    -$42.82 USD
    -$34.99 USD

No rebate shown in my account. Now, perhaps there’s some “takes a while” small print, and it will show. So far, zippo.

i signed up in the original format, but i read the terms and conditions. they were not giving your refund until may. so i have no clue whether i will get mine or not. paypal does suck but i am such a big ebay user, what choice do i have?

  3. Amy Alkon says:

Hmm, and then there’s this as one of the reasons you wouldn’t be eligible:

    PayPal ATM/ Debit Card payments

Of course, my PayPal comes out of my checking account. Is that what this means?

  4. loveshinesthru says:

amy i think it means if you use your paypal atm/debit card for purchase?

  5. loveshinesthru says:

amy i think it means you cant use your paypal atm/debit card for purchases?

  6. loveshinesthru says:

    sorry comment wasnt showing up…

  7. The Frog says:

I got the email, but I had signed up for the rebate before getting the email, so who knows if I get the rebate or not.

PAYPAL SUCKS!!! What more can I say??? I’ve had so many nightmares with them in the past when I used to be a heavy ebayer…I even tried to boycott them but then my sales went down due to the fact that everyone uses it on ebay! Are you listening Google??? Please step up and use your massive powerhouse to destroy them!!!!!!! Ok so maybe Im going overboard but ya’ll get the idea I’m sure. Paypal makes me sick but as of right now there really is no competitor that people really use so for now they are a necessary evil.

This seems to me to be simply a poorly executed attempt at copying the Google Checkout discounts of the holiday season. I myself have a three year old Premier Paypal account, never recieved this email, and can’t get the one-time-only $15 dollars off that apparently you have to wait until June to actually receive. Quite a bit shy of the nice $20 off $50, unlimited usage, instant discount deal Google had going.

    Paypal sucks.

  10. matrixhax0r says:

Damn it. I tried to do it today when I ordered something from newegg. Too bad newegg doesn’t support Google Checkout.

RESTRICTIONS?? On a REBATE??? Say it aint so!

Structurepolo, you are NOT going overboard. A bigger fish needs to take down this bully. Paypal has Ebay users by the short ones….

  12. Maulleigh says:

I have no love for the paypal. I sold things on ebay in the late nineties and then didn’t for years. In that time I’d moved, gotten new phone numbers and switched banks. Even changed my email. They had me go through HOOPS Möbius strips of customer service emails and phone call pains in my ass to change my information.

It became painfully clear when I updated my register.com account recently and changed all my info (phone, address, email, bank account) with NO PROBLEM AND A THANKS AGAIN!!!

  13. no.no.notorious says:

It is not easier or more convenient than just typing in my credit information manually. It has NEVER worked for me and I can’t even delete my half signed-up account. PaySatan is a better name.

  14. lpranal says:

If they meant to restrict this to people who received the email- why not use a coupon code? Or require it to be done via email? I emailed Paypal customer service, and they are apparently going to give it to me anyway.

Hello, my name is ######, and thank you for contacting PayPal.

XXXXXX, I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience you experienced. The
Cash Rebate will be deposited into your PayPal account by May 1, 2007.

Please note: Limit one registration and one $15 rebate per person and/or
    PayPal account.

Don’t know if I’ll ever see it, but I won’t be too surprised if I don’t.

  15. Rahnee says:

I agree that PayPal is a necessary evil. Maybe the money they are supposedly giving back will be from the sale of those new key chain security tags they are selling. I’m not sure how it will tighten their security but at $5 a pop they will make a good bit of money.

  16. whsprint says:

As much as it looks like Paypal changed something in the last few days – do we know if the terms and conditions actually changed? It may have had this restriction the entire time.

I also wonder what criteria that Paypal is using to send out the rebates. Are they possibly restricting it to people who didn’t use the rebate in December? I know I only used the google checkout discount then.

  17. comedian says:

From the Paypal terms for this offer:

The $15.00 USD rebate will be deposited into your PayPal account by May 28, 2007.

I didn’t get a special invite, but it did show me the special when I signed on once. I registered with my primary email address then made a (hopefully) qualifying purchase.

I guess we’ll have to wait a few months to see how this shakes out.

  18. phrygian says:

I didn’t get a special invite and when I entered my email address, I received a message informing me that I don’t qualify for the rebate. I didn’t try to sign up before today though, so I can’t say whether or not it gave this type of message to “non-qualifiers” before.

It’s nice to know that Paypal values me so much. Especially since I’ve had an account with them since they started.

  19. Antediluvian says:

Amy, the rebate says it’ll show up either by May 1 or May 28 2007 (CSR email says 5/01, offer says 5/28). It’ll probably take a while for you to see it show up in your acct. Many people seemed to think this was an instant rebate. It’s not — gotta wait until May.

  20. lore says:

The promotion was available on their front page for a long time, for ALL users. I don’t see why they would change the terms now.

  21. What a steaming load of PayPal.

I signed up for the rebate, but got no instructions on how to actually use this magical new $15 off deal. I assumed that my next purchase would reflect the discount, and used PayPal on a $800 eBay buy.

Nothing shown at checkout, no answer from the emails I sent to PayPal, just stone cold silence.

I can’t wait for Google checkout to become more popular. PayPal really needs a competitor.

  22. alrument says:

Google Checkout has gained enough popularity to compete with Paypal on eBay, but eBay (owns Paypal) has declared Checkout to be an “unsafe” payment method and retaliates against sellers who use checkout by cancelling their auctions or suspending their accounts.

Google Checkout is unsafe: unsafe for Paypal’s monopoly on eBay.

  23. thereviewer says:

I signed up originally, and still have not gotten it. I signed up day 1, and bought something the next day.

  24. brokenboy says:

When I signed up it distinctly said that the rebate woulds show up in March (the 15th I think). I don’t expect to see anything until then, so this doesn’t mean you didn’t get it if it doesn’t show up right away.

  25. Amy Alkon says:

Thanks for the date info. I think, the next time I sign up for something like this, I’ll take a couple of screenshots.

  26. cqoutseller says:

Paypal can you and do one… They desreve all the bad publicity they get. they treat their customers like dirt, they have policies they can’t even uphold, they are judge, jury & executioner. I hope they get what is surely coming to them..
