Walmart Layaway Ends Friday
If you've got something on layaway at Walmart, this Friday is your last day to pick it up. Of the major retailers, Kmart still supports layaway.
From the Pittsburgh P-G:
- "Alleda Glanton, 54, of Beltzhoover, shook her head about Wal-Mart's decision as her daughter-in-law, Arlene Scoggins, 30, of Beltzhoover, put some baby things on layaway at Kmart.
"They try to push that on you," she said of the credit option. "But if you don't want credit, why should you have to get credit? That's just like everywhere you go, they want you to have another credit card. Working people don't always have that money to just buy it right out."
So, while credit cards are "modern", at Kmart—layaway is here to stay. —MEGHANN MARCO

I miss layaways. Now that I'm a big-shot with money, I buy everything on a CC that I pay off every month and pocket the reward rebates. But in my younger, poorer days I did a lot of layaways. They were great... you weren't really "borrowing" because you didn't get the 'thing' until you finished paying for it. It was like forced saving. Made me feel great that I could buy something out of my price range just by putting down a few bucks and making a few bucks in payments every week. I bought me and my wife's first wedding bands from J.C. Penney on layaway. Too bad it's gone.

Wal-Mart is operating on such thin margins, a totenkopf t-shirt placed on layaway causes an imbalance in account receivables, that ripples all the way to the bottom line...destroying positive OIBITDA/EBITA...killing a quarter's numbers and scuttling long-term business plans...
K-Mart operates on a Five Year Plan and can afford it with their cantankerous, less-than-JIT inventory scheme.
