Save 50% On Utility Bills

2911 views

MyMoneyBlog found a great way to save on home energy expenses, The Home Energy Saver online calculator.

"First, you give it your zip code, and it pulls up some initial information on your house based on your geographic area. You can then go with those estimates or enter in more details for a more accurate analysis. The tool then calculates your home's energy consumption and potential energy-saving ideas. You can even choose a specific payback period and they will only give you recommendations that will be profitable within that period.

You can then see how your energy costs break down into six categories: heating, cooling, water heating, major appliances, lighting, and small appliances."

This is pointless if you live in anything other than a house (like a condo...)

I'll sum up how this works:

Q:"Do you live in an hold house?"
A:Replace everything that uses electricity.
Q:"Do you have insulation?"
A:Buy insulation.

Yep, that about sums it up. For me it recommended investing what adds up to somewhere between $5,000 and $10,000 in order to save around $350 a year. I'm passing.

Really nice, both of you.

"Screw the environment--energy efficiency is a ridiculous idea! It costs more!"

My utility bill last month?

$28.

I am in a condo though. And my place gets so hot, I have to open the windows on cold days.

Falsefridays... I'm an uberenvironmentalist.. I'm just saying that the site is pointless.

If you can't figure out changing an incandescent light bulb to a compact fluorescent and replacing a 1960s fridge to an energy star one saves energy... Then this website would be useful for you.

One day, I told my friend from Singapore that I was running my dryer and the dishwasher and she gave me a look of disgust - over the msn messenger, of course. It seems like all these appliances are such a waster of energy.

And I told her, I do not think it is expensive and of course the weather etc....

But the bottom line is that electric is so cheap in US, regardless of how we complain about it and we are all talking about being environmentally friendly. It is cheaper to waste energy.

Just look at cars, if we post a rule to use cars/trucks that meet certain mileage standards, that US do not have to go to war to protect its oil interest. However, it is because of profits to companies and the lobbyist, the government will never put that rule in place.
