Commenter Executions

Comment land is usually pretty laissez-faire. That said, there are a few things we can't abide, like:

Shilling
Excessive trolling
Trying to break the comment system

Our society must be purged of these dangerous elements. Cock your rifles, johnnies.

too_much_hate: Pretending to be a customer when they're obviously just fronting for the sleazy lawncare company company we reported on.

Narnia: Willfully seeding unclosed format tags in the comments area.

Hotsuma: Calling someone afflicted by a compulsive shopping disorder a "dumb b!t(h." [sic] Go back to Kotaku, noob.

Report any similarly unseemly activity to tips at consumerist dot com.

"Go back to Kotaku, noob"

At least you didn't say "prepare to be wtfbbqpwned"

Hey this brings up a question - what do you do if you accidentally don't close a formatting tag? Is there an email address for some Gawker Inc intern who will fix it? Or should we bug you guys with that stuff?

user-pic

DJ: Malatrons invites have been disabled.
Kerry: The easiest thing to do is try and fix it yourself. Just add a new comment with the necessary format tag closers.

Really what we need to do is make it so your formatting only affects your comment, not the whole page. I've told tech this but nothing has happened yet.

Coding the board to throw a bunch of close tags at the end of each comment can't be too difficult.

Mybe you need to smack tech around a little. Or bribe them with donuts.

I'd try the donuts, first.

Little tag buttons that insert both the start and end tags.

Nothing like a public execution. But the real question is whether this capital punishment actually deters others from committing the same offenses.

user-pic

Some people (hi) like to do it themselves, except every now and then we bend a nail or two. It happens. The We-Do-It-For-You buttons just tend to annoy me.

But yeah, if I see any post of mine with a screwed up tag somewhere, I'll try and fix it.

My complaint with the new(ish) system is that there doesn't seem to be any thorough validation.

I brought this to the attention of Brian Lam, and he forwarded off to the Code Ninjas..but alas, I can still do annoying things like inline frames.

I'm surprised a popular site like this does not just strip all format tags from the comment system. I rarely ever see anyone using formatting anyways here so why not just add that in?

user-pic

I think I got banned for not being snarky enough.

user-pic

I'm surprised they don't use UBB style formatting codes. Speaking of HTML, there's at least one tag I know that haven't disabled that you really really should.

user-pic

Oh, there are a ton of tags that are enabled that shouldn't be. One of the articles over on Gizmodo has some interesting experiments. Favicon was changed, some CSS tweaks, etc.

But in my opinion, the iframe thing is one of the worst. It would be really horrible to run a script that snagged session variables..

You killed Narnia? Tash couldn't do it, Jadis couldn't do it...I hope you're proud.

Hi! I don't think we've ever met.

Now that this is off the front page I have to do this: Please don't ban me Ben.
