Telcos Are Luddites

An upcoming Business Week article socks phone companies right in the kisser for their squelching of new technologies.

It's been said by many before us but deregulation was supposed to be good for the marketplace. Instead, the phone companies gobbled each other up. A paucity of players limits the amount of competitive ideas. Less competition bodes ill for the consumer.

Which is why they need to make WiFi enabled Skype cellphones.

(Thanks to Philip!)

This is a test using rich text formatting and html links. It's the generic "company" ad that should appear on all posts with the Company category if they don't have an ad attached to a specific company.

Isn't this just the standard American business model though? Develop something/buy a company that developed something, market it, sell it, protect it by any means necessary from competition, new technologies, and/or customer loss, the product reaches a point where it is no longer viable, and then start the process over again?

A book called "Smart Mobs" by Howard Rheingold is a good read regarding the issues raised by this article.

The crippled cell-phones really burn my britches.
