Boston Macy's Removes Gay Mannequins
Until yesterday, two male mannequins, one wearing a rainbow flag, stood watch inside a Boston Macy's. At their right was a calendar for Boston Pride, a nine-day gay pride event.
Macy's removed the mannequins in response to a letter and phone campaign organized by a fringe conservative religious site MassResistance.
The group's president, Brian Camenker, told the Boston Herald how the display bothered him. "They were male mannequins with enlarged breasts, and one was wearing a skirt. It was really disgusting," he said.
Christina Stewart, a Macy's Customer Service Specialist, sent out a mass email to complainants, "I regret that we have offended you in any way in our commitment to be inclusive. We thank you for taking the time to inform us of your concerns and hope that you will reconsider your decision to visit us again."
Now Macy's must contend with the GLBT community. The Towelroad blog writes, "Did they happen to think about what their gay customers and employees would think of the move? Obviously not. I'll think twice before stepping into another Macy's until the store reassembles the display and apologizes."
Has MassResistance has ever gone to Abercrombie & Fitch?

- "Like many other community initiatives and organizations that Macy's has supported over the years, including
window displays and programs in celebration of Black History Month and St. Patricks Day, the window currently
showcasing events for Boston Pride week at Macy's downtown supports a diverse part of our community. Macy's
respects the many backgrounds, traditions, beliefs and heritage of all our customers and will continue to support
a range of community causes, organizations, and initiatives that add to the cultural diversity of the markets we
serve.
Our intention is always to welcome and include all members of the communities we serve, and certainly is never intended to cause any discomfort to you or any of our shoppers. I regret that we have offended you in any way in our commitment to be inclusive. So they decide to insult the community they were trying to serve by removing the display because another community decided it was offensive?
Macy's needs to learn they can't please everyone all at once. If they don't like the display, don't look at it.
This same thing happened in the DC area several months ago with the local mall opened a new wing with a new Victoria's Secret and people freaked out over the racy display.
People need lives.
So Macy's is hedging their bets by sending two separate messages, but unfortunately they put them in the wrong envelopes: The mass emails they sent to the conservative wackos says "Fuck you cuz we support all the members of our diverse community," but then the gay boys and girls who walk down the street see that the mannequins got removed from the display and hear that Macy's removed them under pressure from the neocons. What a PR nightmare! Couldn't have been handled worse!
This is also a dumb move on Macy's part because it underscores how totally shallow and PR-driven their "support" of any particular social cause is.
I mean, it's not like I actually believe that buinesses really *care* about Black history month/childhood leukemia/overseas famine/whatever, but to backpeadal this quickly sends the overwhelming message of, "We only do this stuff to get people to come to our stores, & we have absolutely no moral interest in the thing itself."
When will the revolution begin in this country? Why do people continue to accept medieval religious dogma instead of embracing the egalitarian tolerance that is the basis of this country's national philososphy and form of government? It seems that the Enlightenment of the 1700s has finally worn off completely.
There's a difference between the Tysons Corner Victoria's Secret having a windowful of suggestively posed near-naked mannequins right across from the highly touted new children's play area, and Macy's putting upright, fully clothed (if pectorally gifted) mannequins in window on a city street. I'm not saying that defends the indignance of those who objected to either display; they're just not the same thing.
I sent a note to both Ms. Stewart and through Macy's official contact website; the first generated no response, but the latter has apparently been passed along to Sue McMahon, VP Customer Service. More details here: http://splittingtheadam.typepad.com/splitting_the_adam/200...

It's tough trying to seem open-minded but still be acceptable by mainstream customers. I would have added some lesbians and 'straight people' in the mix, but... meh.
