Arson To The Rescue When SUV Owners Can’t Afford Gas

Is the Charybdis of your SUV’s gas tank getting you down? Why not purge it in cleansing fire? For $300 dollars, a weasel in a black trench coat will be more than happy to steal your SUV for you and light it on fire so you can reclaim the insurance money. And you’ll even be in Rome: a spate of such arson crimes are sweeping California.

The problem is predicated by rising gas prices. With the sweet liquid bread that the average SUV consumes costing upwards of $3 a gallon, a lot of SUV owners are spending that month’s car payments just keeping the beast running. They could try selling it, but what sort of maniacal Mister Moneybags would you have to be to buy an SUV now? While California is full of wealthy lunatics, most of them aren’t buying used vehicles.

Which leaves arson and collecting the insurance money. Police were tipped off by the growing insurance scam when firefighters were called to a Los Angeles river bed and found not one but two SUVs burning simultaneously. Now that’s efficiency.

  1. Makes sense to me. Anyway, it’s in the Insurance company’s interest not to investigate these losses. Auto insurance is a regulated industry. They are only allowed a profit of 7% or something. So, the more payouts there are, the more they have to raise rates, which equals a larger amount for that 7%.

Besides, I’d bet dollars to donuts that the people burning their SUVs work for insurance companies.

Now why didn’t I think of that?

Oh, yeah, cuz I drive a Civic.

  3. Jesse in Japan says:

Well, if you were stupid enough to buy an SUV in the first place…

  4. From the end of TFA:

“In Texas, two students were arrested after they torched their high school teacher’s car in exchange for passing grades.”

    Que?

Well, fair enough, I suppose. Texan kids are social pariahs if anybody finds out they actually passed.
