A Double Indemnity for the skid row set, a pair of golden grannies have been arrested in a homeless life insurance scam nothing short of diabolical. You won't wash the taste of this one out your mouth with a bottle of discount lighter fluid anytime soon.

Pictured respectively, Olga Rutterschmidt and Helen Golay were charged yesterday on suspicion of befriending homeless men and paying for them to live in apartments, in exchange for signing life insurance policies naming the women as beneficiaries.

Two years later, the men are found killed in hit-and-run car accidents. Reports LAT:

"All the policies that were taken out by Helen and Olga were low-cost, term life insurance policies, where you can get the maximum amount of face value for the minimum premium," said Stephen H. Galton, an attorney representing Garden State Life Insurance in a civil case against Golay. "All of these policies had a two-year contestable period. After two years, the insurance company cannot rescind or cancel the policies.

Neighbors described [Rutterschmidt] as temperamental.

"If she was a sweet old lady, I'd say she was a sweet old lady," said neighbor Glenn Spinola. "But what can you do?"
