Borders, Waldenbooks Afraid Of Jihad
Borders and Waldenbooks have decided not to sell the April-May issue of Free Inquiry magazine because it republishes the Mohammed cartoons that provided an excuse for a bunch of medieval savages around the world to start burning down embassies, killing and rioting.
We can understand why Borders and Waldenbooks decided not to sell the magazine (although we wonder if they would have made the same choice if the magazine in question was Time or Newsweek). We appreciate that the safety of their customers comes first. But we're dismayed that this sort of pandering towards those who would sooner slit the throat of someone than laugh at a cartoon character is necessary.

.....Who gets made fun of on the playground? The skinny, gentle kid with orthopedic shoes, or the overgrown bully who'll smash your head into the teeter-totter just for kicks? And we know who REALLY sucks: the US Border Patrol! Of course, the Islamic bullies will probably just bomb our embassies in Asia, not the local Borders. The Mexican smugglers won't put up with fundamentalist Islamic crap! When was the last time you saw a hispanic immigrant blow himself up? They do a hell of a lot better screening job than TSA, to be sure!

Borders and Waldenbooks suck. Mohammad sucks. George W. Bush sucks. Unicorns suck. I don't necessarily believe ANY of those particular statements, but I ought to be able to say them without having to worry that some fanatic might blow me up for saying so. Or that Borders and Waldenbooks might keep my works off their shelves just because my opinion is unpopular with some particular group. If someone wants to get on his weblog or publish a book or article that says I suck, fine. Though I will state publicly that I disagree wholeheartedly with that particular opinion (and can show through various testimony and evidence that such an opinion is GRIEVOUSLY misinformed, I might add), I will fight to the death for the ignorant bastard's right to say it. And so should Borders and Waldenbooks.
