New VW Ads in Da Haus
Volkswagon wants to 'un-pimp' your ride in a new campaign celebrating its German engineering heritage.
Ragtag urban youth get their tricked out hoopties destroyed in a secret laboratory and replaced by the clean, white, blond, superior engineered GTI's.
Are these the first Aryan Car Nation commercials?
Sexy vid after the 21 Jump Street...
"We just dropped it," on your car, "like it's hot. Representing Deutschland!"
"What does this do?"
"It sucks in air."
"It's definitely sucking."
"German engineering in da haus, ja."
The commercials were created by agency hotshop Cripsin Porter & Bogusky, who achieved fame and notoriety for their innovative Mini Cooper and creepy Burger King work.
Drawing upon a car company's national heritage is a tactic used successfully recently by Mistubishi.
Having grown into an industry giant, is CP&B now second-guessing itself, looking over its shoulder? Allusions to the "Farfegnugen" campaign are not difficult to draw.
Frankly, we expected something more freshmahker.

Bonus Notion: Say the tagline to VW's other new campaign with a German accent. "Make friends with your fast." It's not far from, "Make friends with your Faust."

I don't know. They're funny, but a bit too close to the whole Hanz and Franz interpretation of German weirdness.
I think the "Make friends with your Fast" spots are a bit funnier. Though there's the typical "Brand Icon" thing that they used with Burger King, with less memorable results. Though they're popping up on EBay for lots of money now, I guess.
Oh, and Helga's German accent sucks.
CP&B's most pronounced talent is their ability to pierce the mental callouses left by the thousands of advertisers who molested our minds in years past. Ever since I saw a Mini Cooper ad in Wired that provided me with REAL Krispy Kreme coupons -- intended so that I could keep hot doughnuty bribes in the car in case the po-po nailed me for speeding in my Mini -- I've known those guys were something special.
I'd hardly say that these ads represent a masterwork for the agency, but at the same time, you've posted links to YouTubed versions of the ads and here we are talking about them, so I guess that talent I mentioned remains sharp.
Hey, here's something: give us a competition of best or worst ad agencies, with example TV or print work, once worst companies wraps up.
Go to the website in the ad, http://www.vwfeatures.com , "build" your car and then click "watch your joyride". You get a very funny video of "Helga" taking you for a test ride in a car with the exact features you have just chosen. Try with different options, clever interactive advertising.

Is that Peter Stormare? (Fargo, Lebowski, Minority Report)
That guy's Swedish!
